More Meals, to More People, More Often

To commemorate Madiba's legacy, the Do More Foundation provided nearly 7000 nutritious meals to vulnerable children and adults on Mandela Day this year. Close to 700 volunteers pitched in to prepare and deliver a cooked lunch to organisations across South Africa – a great way for ordinary people to 'DO MORE' for those in need!

Founded by RCL FOODS, the Do More Foundation was recently established for exactly that purpose: to DO MORE for the most vulnerable members of society by collaborating with like- minded organisations to ease hunger, support early childhood development and care for animals. The foundation's core belief is that achieving strong, sustainable solutions depends on partnerships between a range of stakeholders – from corporates to NGOs, NPOs and government departments – to create a better future for the most vulnerable members of society.

"The heroes in this model are the recipients themselves, as well as the ordinary people who give of their time, energy and resources to make a difference. That's why Mandela Day is such an appropriate first event for the Foundation. It's collaborative and it's all about people putting people first in true Madiba spirit," says Foundation Executive and trustee, Warren Farrer.

Proof of people's appetite for 'doing more' was their massive response to the foundation's call for Mandela Day volunteers. Between 28 June and 18 July, over 660 employees from 27 RCL FOODS prepared hot meals for 31 organisations across the country.

Events kicked off on Wednesday 28 June when 22 volunteers from Roodepoort, Gauteng cooked for 1000 learners from the Tswelelang Higher Primary School. On Thursday 29, groups went out in KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape to feed 80 children from Buhlebemvelo Crèche in Pongola and 200 from Sinetemba aftercare in Worcester.

The biggest push came on Mandela Day itself when 3984 meals were provided across six provinces – 3000 of them from RCL FOODS' national office in Westville. All meals included pap and chicken, with some larger sites also preparing chakalaka and coleslaw. RCL FOODS products (Nola Mayonnaise, Rainbow Chicken, Tafelberg Maize Meal and Nola Sunflower Oil) made up the bulk of each meal.

"With the support of ordinary people with big hearts, we made Mandela Day count for even more this year. Together we really did DO MORE," says Farrer.
